Book Club Discussion Questions

  1. Losing part of yourself in order to achieve success is a dominant theme in the book.  Do you think it's necessary to lose the person you were in the past to succeed in life?  Why?  Why not?
  2. Lupe makes the difficult choice to abandon her family.  This is frowned upon in the Latino culture, but she does so for self-preservation.  Did she make the right choice?  How could she have handled things differently?
  3. Love may conquer all, but sometimes it can also blind a person.  How was Lupe blinded by her love for Nash?
  4. Did Nash love Lupe?
  5. What void does Will fill in Lupe's life?  How about Nash?
  6. What does the Alvarez family provide Lupe with that she lacks in her life?
  7. Was Nash a hero?  Was Will a hero?  Who was better suited for Lupe, Nash or Will?
  8. do you feel about Lupe's views on sex?  Why do you think she reacts in often contradictory ways?
  9. Did the event with Nash at the end of the book change Lupe?  How?

  1. Both Marcela and Nash thought they knew what was best for Lupe, but were they right?  What was Lupe's true calling in life?  Will she ever follow her true passion?
  2. The Vibe is a haven for the community, but it is idealized in the book.  How can a youth center actually help young people who are trapped in gang situations?
  3. How did Lupe and Marcela's relationship change from Becoming Latina to Becoming Americana?
  4. Lupe was stronger than both Nash and Marcela in one area of her personality.  What do you feel that is?
  5. How does the way Lupe and Carlos were raised affect each child differently?
  6. Lupe's tough exterior in BECOMING LATINA has been tempered in BECOMING AMERICANA, however throughout the book there is evidence that she is still the same girl.  Her rage is just below the surface as is her defiance (evident by the way she drives).  Do you think she conquers and finally extinguishes this rage by the end of the book?
  7. There is an implied good vs. evil theme--the light vs. the dark side between Lupe and her brother Carlos as they fight for the souls of the neighborhood.  Do you think Carlos was really evil?  How were Lupe and Carlos actually similar?  How were they both victims?
  8. Lupe views the American world as everything she's not.  How does this keep her from growing and how does this make her decisions and life choices more difficult?  Is there one way to become American?
  9. Does Lupe become Americana?
